How to Store Glass Ornaments
How to Store Glass Ornaments Like a Pro
Glass ornaments are not new to the market of Christmas ornaments by any means. In fact, some would argue that glass ornaments are the original ornaments, so using these on your trees these days is a way to honor the past. Blown glass ornaments were some of the first mass-marketed ornaments that people were buying. They were extremely fragile and often in more traditional shapes to hang on the tree. What was such a marvel for people was the fact that they now had ornaments they could hang on their tree at the start of December rather than waiting until closer to Christmas Eve to hang these. Remember, before the invention of the ornaments you see on the store shelves, more people were hanging real fruits, nuts and the like.
Your glass ornaments are very delicate. They may feel super light so you think that they are save from getting broken because they have no weight to them, but while they may not have weight to them, they are highly breakable. Those who have broken these types of ornaments will often find that they shatter and pieces go everywhere…it makes for a mess to clean up, but it also means that you no longer have what could have been a favorite ornament.
Storing Ornaments After Christmas
With this being said, storing these ornaments after the Christmas season is going to require a little tender care and protection. You want these ornaments to be something that you use from year to year, thus taking care of them now will ensure you do not open your ornament box to find smashed glass ornaments next year. Here are some tips for you to use so you can store these ornaments properly:
1. Wrap these individually, and you are going to want to use a variety of materials to wrap these in. There are those who wrap these in old hand towels, which is an excellent idea. Others use bubble wrap, followed by packing paper.
2. Do not lay anything heavy on these on these ornaments. Remember, they are very fragile, so you need to make sure that you are not sitting anything on them that could cause them to crack and then break later.
3. You may want to avoid layering these ornaments on top of each other, since they are so fragile. You will find that by avoiding this, you may be using more small tote boxes or shoe boxes to store these ornaments, but they are going to be safer.
4. Keep these glass ornaments safely stored in areas that are not going to see a lot of heat or water. While glass is often one of the best materials that can handle temperature changes and water, often these glass ornaments are highly decorative and either the heat or the water could affect the colors of these ornaments.
Remember, glass ornaments are beautiful, but they are something that you need to take the time to store properly. Otherwise, you will find your favorite ornament broken beyond repair.
